Tsi’s Database Academy

Education

From "what is a computer?" to Senior DBA.

Most courses assume you already know something. This one starts at "this is a mouse" and does not stop until you can run a production database. Two hundred and thirty-three lessons in a fixed order across twenty-two phases, each phase opening only when you finish its lessons and pass its quiz at 80 percent, so nobody arrives at replication without understanding a table. Every idea is taught by analogy first and jargon second: a database is granny's notebook, an index is a bookmark, MVCC is a ledger nobody rubs out. And the practice is real rather than screenshots - a genuine PostgreSQL 18 and a genuine Python run inside the browser, alongside a safe Linux and Windows terminal, a monitoring lab, and a war room where a live outage is yours to fix.

This one is named for the person who walked the road.

Tsi is a database administrator becoming a site reliability engineer. The Academy is the road he walked, written down while he was walking it, which is why it starts further back than any course you have seen. Not at SELECT. At "this is a mouse".

Because that is where the real gap is. Not talent, and not willingness. A beginner opens a database course, the first page assumes a laptop, a terminal and a vocabulary, and they close it again. The course was never written for them.

So every idea here arrives as something already familiar. A database is granny's notebook. An index is the bookmark that saves you turning every page. MVCC is a ledger where nothing is ever rubbed out, only crossed through. The jargon comes after the idea, never before it.

And then it gets real. A genuine PostgreSQL runs inside the browser, on the learner's own phone, with the network switched off. When a lesson says dead rows make a table bloat, nobody has to take it on faith: they run the update, press a button, and watch 104 kB become 400 kB on their own screen. That is the difference between being told and knowing.

Built for everyone who was told this career was not for them, and for the teachers who always knew better. From "what is a computer?" to Senior DBA.

The problem

The people who most need this are the ones every course locks out. Beginner material still assumes a laptop, an email address, a card, and constant data. Serious database training assumes you are already an engineer. In between sits everybody who could do this job and has no way in: the school leaver with one shared phone, the working DBA whose Oracle years do not transfer on paper, the teacher with forty pupils and no lab. And almost none of it works when the network does not.

How it works

1

Start from absolute zero

Phase one is what a computer is, what a mouse does, and how a file differs from a folder. No prior knowledge, no jargon before the idea it names, and a first name is the only thing ever asked for.

2

Watch it happen, then do it

Five beats per lesson: read it, watch it happen, do it yourself, answer the check, then prove it on a real server. A genuine PostgreSQL runs in the browser, so when a lesson says an un-vacuumed table grows four times too big, you press a button and watch your own copy go from 104 kB to 400 kB.

3

You cannot skip ahead

Each phase unlocks only when its lessons are done and its quiz is passed at 80 percent, and search finds only what you have already unlocked, so you are never handed an answer you have not earned. Already a DBA? A fast track maps Oracle, SQL Server or MySQL across to PostgreSQL, and a placement test opens the right phases.

4

A teacher writes one code on the board

Pupils tap "Join my class", type the code and their name, and they are in - no email address, which matters when your pupils are children. The teacher gets a read-only roster with the ones who need help at the top, and a lecture mode that sizes the type for the back row and records nothing while demonstrating.

What it does

  • 233 lessons across 22 phases, in order: computers, Windows and Linux, SQL end to end, PostgreSQL internals (MVCC, dead rows, TOAST, WAL, wraparound), Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL, high availability, monitoring, cloud, CI/CD and site reliability engineering
  • A real PostgreSQL 18 and a real Python running locally in the browser, plus a safe Linux and Windows terminal where nothing can break
  • Genuinely offline: lessons, quizzes and typefaces ship with the app, and one tap puts the database and Python engines on the device for good
  • Classrooms without email addresses: one class code, pupils self-enrol, a teacher roster gated by PIN, and a lecture mode that records nothing
  • A war room with a live outage to fix, a monitoring lab, interview preparation, and a DB Studio that shows pgAdmin, SSMS and OEM as one shape
  • Tsi, a voiced AI tutor who knows the whole course, in English, French and Pidgin, with printable certificates for each chapter finished

Who it is for

Anyone who wants this job and has been locked out of it - school leavers, career changers, and working DBAs moving from Oracle or SQL Server to PostgreSQL - and the teachers and training centres who teach them, from one shared phone in Buea to a full computer lab.
